Frequently Asked Questions
If you’re new to swim team and are questioning if it’s right for your family, below are some commonly asked questions. More details about practice, meets, parent commitment, and more can be found on the pages of our website. If you’re still not sure, contact Coach Janine and she will be happy to answer your questions.
What is swim team and why would I want my child to participate?
It's fun! It's great exercise, and it builds confidence. It's a great way for your child to meet other kids in the community. It's also a great way for you to meet other parents.
What swimming strokes does my child need to know to join the team?
We will teach your child the 4 strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. No prior experience with swimming these strokes is necessary. We do require that your child can swim the length of the pool unassisted. For children who are not quite able to do this, Del Norte Club has a terrific private lesson program to help get your child ready for swim team. Contact the Del Norte Club for more information.
I just want my child to learn how to swim better. Do they have to swim in competition?
Yes, participation in swim team means competing in swim meets. We ask for participation in two (2) meets minimum, plus Championships. Meets are Saturdays running from mid-May through July. We end our season with Championships, a two-day weekend event with events scheduled on both Saturday and Sunday.
Can my child play baseball and be on the swim team?
Definitely. We have many swimmers who do both. Swim practice is Monday-Friday starting April. You can attend as many practices as your schedule allows, although three practices per week are encouraged. We ask for participation in 2 swim meets minimum, plus Champs.
Can my child attends summer day camp/summer school and be on the swim team?
Yes. We switch to morning practice in June but still offer make-up practices for swimmers that attend camp or summer school. .
Does my child have to attend all meets?
No. You must declare your swimmer to "Attend" or "Decline" on the Monday prior to a Saturday meet. Your swimmer needs to participate in two (2) league meets to be eligible for Championships; All swimmers are expected to attend Championships.
Should I stay and watch a swim practice?
You're welcome to watch. Please refrain from talking with the coaches during practice. Practice is when the coach spends time with the swimmers. Please hold your questions for the coach until before or after practice.
If we can’t make our regular practice time can we come to a different one?
No. Our practice groups are organized and coached with a variety of factors taken into account. Your child will not be permitted to swim outside his/her assigned practice group.
What about the parent commitment?
Swim team is run solely by parent volunteers. Each family is required to fulfill volunteer requirements by signing up for 6-8 shifts during the regular season and 2 shifts during Champs or by signing up as a coordinator for a particular job for the entire season (i.e. Set Up/Tear Down Crew, Age Group Parent).
